The Independence of working for one’s self overshadows any of the advantages that anyone can put forward for being employed by another person or company. In addition to being able to set your own goals both financially and mentally, a self-employed person can either pat themselves on the back for their success or kick themselves in the butt for their temporary set backs.
In self-employment there is no failure, there is only the next challenge. A true self- employed entrepreneur never sees an end to working for them self. Their ambition in life is the continued Independence that self-employment affords us.
After seven successful years in the state location, for reasons still unknown to us the state kicked us out with 45 days notice. My wife and I were really upset and I began calling people that we knew in the state and complaining to them about what had happened. One evening while sitting at home contemplating our next move and complaining about the state and what they had done to us and our business, my wife looked at me and said, “We need to concentrate our efforts on the continuation of our business and stop the negativity on which we are lingering concerning the actions of the state.” It was difficult to stop complaining, but we did and found a new location for our business where we kept the same customer base.
Our business was slow to start in the new location because of the move and because of the lull in the economy this year. The price of fuel was approaching $4 per gallon and the housing crisis had people’s confidence down, but we kept the business going and even were able to begin to see advantages that we were unable to persue as long as we were under the state’s thumb. We made those changes and our business is going forward. We are not grossing as much money but we have cut our expenses and the bottom line is actually better now.
My whole point here is that the Independence that having our own business has given us has made our horizons unlimited in our eyes. The key words here are, “our eyes”. You see, we feel that it takes a special person to run and maintain their own business. You are not only your own boss but you are your own man or woman as the case may be.
This self-employment may seem to have something to do with ego to the person who is not self- employed and to a certain extent they may be correct. But I think that the “ego thing” only goes as far as being masters of our own destinies. We had previously started another business and due to a lack being able to find adequate help and other reasons, we have virtually stopped that part of our business venture. Failure is not an option. We will keep on keeping on. We have the mentality, desire and most of all the love of being self-employed. We are special people who don’t know the word quit.
To be self employed is not only a way of making a living, it is a way of living and the people who do it have to love it to do it. We the self employed work countless hours and employ many persons and you would have to love it to continue doing it.
